Modern Foreign Languages
Modern Foreign Languages aim to create the very best Linguists that we can, with the intention of widening the horizons of all students from the Derby community, to see beyond their own lives and look to discover what other cultures can offer and inspire them to do, and be.
We do this by equipping all our students with the knowledge and skills to be able to succeed in language learning; encouraging and inspiring them with our own teaching and personal experiences of life abroad, and broadening their awareness of other countries and communities. Our curriculum at AWS goes beyond what is taught in lessons, for whilst we want students to achieve the very best examination results possible, we believe our curriculum needs to go beyond what is just an exam, through a range of cultural linguistic experiences and trips abroad designed to enrich the study of languages.
Students are taught grammatical structures, and vocabulary using the correct terminology and making explicit links to English and the foreign language’s grammatical structures and vocabulary.
We intend to support the Cultural Capital of all our pupils, by setting them up as intercultural citizens. We do this by providing curriculum that teaches them about the country as well as the language they are learning.
The topic areas and grammatical structures which are introduced at KS3, are seen as building blocks for more in-depth learning at KS4 (& KS5) and the use of IT programmes such as Pearson Active Learn.
