Special Educational Needs
Introduction
The Learning Support Faculty monitors and works with all students including those with Special Educational Needs.
The key way of supporting students is within the classroom in different subject areas supported by Teaching Assistants, Communication Support Workers for the hearing impaired students plus Teachers of the Deaf and Learning Support teachers. However, some students are withdrawn from lessons for small group or individual tuition for basic literacy.
Initial concerns about students are dealt with by teaching staff by differentiation of the subject material with advice from Learning Support staff. If there continues to be concern about a student’s progress, further consultation takes place with the student’s parents and teaching staff. Assessment, individual strategies and targets may be put in place to help the students. The school has a strong pastoral care system in place that can provide students with support, mentoring and counselling where appropriate. Outside agencies, such as, School Health, LEA Advisory staff, Educational Psychology Service and Education Welfare can all be called upon by the school for advice and support with students.
