Introduction

Science plays an important part in the curriculum at Woodlands and we aim to encourage pupils to develop their skills in observation and enquiry into the world around them, and to recognise usefulness and limitations of scientific methods in their everyday lives.  At Key Stage 3, all pupils follow a program of study based on integrated scientific themes which is matched to the QCA scheme of work and to National Curriculum Attainment targets.  At Key Stage 4 pupils are prepared for GCSE using the OCR Gateway scheme and OCR Additional Applied Science Scheme.  The school expanded in 1996 to include a Sixth Form, and AS Biology is taught using OCR and AS and A2 Biology, Chemistry, Physics are taught using the AQA Modular specifications.  Module examinations are taken in Years 12 and 13.

Staffing and Resources

There are eleven teachers of Science in the school.  In addition to the Director of Science, there are two Deputy Directors 2.  There are three Laboratory Technicians who assist colleagues in the preparation of materials for practical lessons and a Faculty Assistant supports in administration and enhancing the teaching and learning environments. Teaching is almost exclusively within the Faculty and in addition to this Science teachers also ensure the PSE program program is delivered to a high standard. The school has nine, well-resource laboratories allowing the Science teaching and learning to take place in a laboratory.

Organisation

At Key Stage 3 pupils are taught for three periods a week in their tutor groups in Years 7 and 8, and are broadly setted in Year 9.  Wherever possible, one teacher delivers the integrated course for the whole academic year in Key Stage 3.  At Key stage 4 all pupils have five or six Science lessons per week taught by three subject teachers.  At Key Stage 4 pupils are taught by almost exclusively subject specialist teachers for each module. The Faculty organises its own setting arrangements in Years 9, 10 & 11 according to previous achievement in Science.
