Aesthetics, Art & Design

Introduction

Woodlands operates a Faculty system. Aesthetics consists of Art, Drama and Music.
The three Art rooms are situated within the Craft Block, a short distance from the Music and Drama bases, which are housed within the Staff Block.   This allows combined projects to take place and such initiatives are actively encouraged.
Within the Staff Block, Drama has separate studios with a large performing area incorporating a stage area.
Music has two separate classrooms, each equipped with keyboards, and there are practice rooms adjoining the smaller of the teaching bases.
In addition, there is a large foyer area which can be used for overspill or small group work by both Drama and Music students.
At present, there are two full time and one part time Art teachers, one of whom is Faculty Director.  Drama is over seen by a subject head with the support of one other teacher. Music is organised along similar lines.
Music has a strong tradition at Woodlands. We are currently looking to build on the huge success of our production of Annie which was put on at the Guildhall in Derby.
There are peripatetic schemes operating for many instruments, as well as choir, band, folk group and several other extra-curricular initiatives.  The school has a fine reputation for its musicals and performance evenings, and the department regularly visits London shows and takes groups to perform abroad.
During the final half of the summer term, the Aesthetics faculty takes the whole of Year 7 out to a local place of interest, where information is gathered to stimulate creative work back in school, culminating in a performance / exhibition event in the last week of the school year.
Cross-Curricular initiatives with other subjects and faculty areas are also actively encouraged, as are creative contributions to the two activity days which bring the final week of the school year to an end.
Parental support is strength and attendance at performance evenings tends to illustrate this.
